SOME RECOMMENDED ELECTIVES
FOR SOCIOLOGY MAJORS AND MINORS
If you have checked out the section on degree requirements for sociology majors, you already know you need a minimum of 120 hours to graduate with a Bachelors degree. While some requirements are fairly rigid (for example, you must complete ENGL 1157 and 1158), considerable flexibility has also been built in to allow students to pursue courses relevant to their interests and career goals. Below you will find listed some of the most common career goals and personal interests:
Social work
Criminal justice/law enforcement/prelaw
Social activism and nonprofit organizations
Social activism and community organizing
Social activism around environmental issues
Social activism around labor issues
Social activism around race/ethnicity issues
Social activism around religious issues
Social activism around sexuality issues
Social activism around women's issues
International affairs
Personnel management
Popular culture work
Applied social research
Social theory
Underneath each of these career goals are listed suggestions for core courses, sociology electives, and non-sociology electives that are likely to be particularly useful to that particular career goal. Please note that we strongly recommend the Sociology Internship Program, which is flexible enough to accomodate virtually any career goal.
You DO NOT have to take all of these electives, or evan any of the recommended courses. These courses are intended only as RECOMMENDATIONS. You are free to pick from this list of recommendations the courses that sound particularly interesting to you, and/or that fit their particular scheduling needs. You are also free to ignore these recommendations entirely and put together a degree plan that works well for you and your interests and needs. Students in the process of choosing electives might also find it useful to check out the Web Page section on Minors in Other Departments.
