Admissions criteria include a good undergraduate record, three letters of recommendation, and satisfactory scores on the Graduate Record Examination. Students must submit applications to both the UNO graduate school and to the Department of Sociology. Student may also apply for graduate assistant positions. Students having the bachelor's degree in fields other than Sociology may be admitted, but are typically required to take an undergraduate theory course for which they receive graduate credit. New graduate swtudents are admitted in either fall, spring, or summer semesters.

A limited number of graduate assistantships are available for qualified applicants each academic year, with a maximum appointment of two years. Assistantships provide students with a salary ($4,144) and payment of tuition. Most graduate assistant positions are allocated for fall semester. Graduate assistants are expected to work twenty hours per week and carry at least 9 hours of course work each semester. Job assignments include classroom instruction and working with faculty members on current research. Every effort is made to match the interests of the students with the interests of faculty member.
