Information About Minors in Other Departments
The University of New Orleans does not require students complete Minors to receive a Bachelors degree. Pursuit of a minor can be easily accommodated with existing degree requirements, however, and with just a little bit of planning students can acquire a minor without having to take any additional course work beyond the 120 hours they must complete to achieve their degree.
For example, to achieve a minor in Psychology a student must complete 18 hours in psychology, including Psychology 1000 and at least two 4000-level courses. Sociology majors must complete 18 hours in Social Science, and 27 hours in additional electives. At least nine of these hours must be outside of sociology, and 6 of these hours must be at the 3000 level or higher. The eighteen hours needed to complete the Psychology Minor can be applied toward these requirements.
The University of New Orleans offers a number of Minors. Following are examples of minors that would be particularly valuable for various career goals.
Social Work: Sociology Major, Psychology Minor
Criminal Justice/Law Enforcement: Sociology Major, Political Science Minor
Personnel Management: Sociology Major, Minor in Business Administration OR Management
Law School: Sociology Major, Minor in Political Science with Pre-Law Concentration
Social Activism: Sociology Major, Minor in Women's Studies OR Environmental Studies OR Communications OR Interdisciplinary Minor in Hypermedia
International Interests: Major in Sociology, Minor in Geography OR Anthropology OR Foreign Languages
Graduate Work in Sociology: Major in Sociology, Minor in Anthropology OR History OR Philosophy
If a Sociology Major chooses to pursue a minor in another department, s/he needs to consult with the undergraduate coordinator of that department to ensure s/he completely understands the requirement for the minor, and completes all paperwork needed to get credit for the minor.
A Word of Caution About Interdisciplinary Minors
The College of Liberal Arts offers several interdisciplinary minors, including in Women's Studies, Environmental Studies, and Hypermedia (information on these minors may be obtained on the College of Liberal Arts web page). In general, interdisciplinary minors work just like disciplinary minors in that the courses taken for completion of the minor can also be double-counted for social science and general elective requirements. There is, however, one important exception with interdisciplinary minors: courses MAY NOT be double-counted toward both major and minor degree requirements. For example, SOC 4871, Sociology of the Environment, may be used as a sociology elective, OR as an elective for the Environmental Studies Minor. It may not, however, be counted both places. To take a hypothetical example: let's suppose a student had completed the 30 hours in sociology required for a Sociology Major, and that three of those hours were the course SOC 4871. Now suppose this same student also wanted to do an Environmental Studies Minor, and wanted to count SOC 4871 toward the minor. In order to do this the student would have to take an additional three hours in sociology to make up for the loss of SOC 4871, now being counted toward the interdisciplinary minor.
